Airport shifts terminal plans as expansion questions remain

“The airport is currently rescoping the Terminal Improvement project to meet budget and infrastructure priorities.”

St. Pete Clearwater International Airport (PIE) is shifting away from a previously discussed large scale terminal expansion, opting instead to focus on improvements and renovations to its existing terminal.

Airport officials, however, are not describing the shift as a cancellation.

Instead, the project is being framed as the airport “… rescoping the Terminal Improvement project to meet budget and infrastructure priorities,” according to language on the airport website, that prioritizes near term infrastructure needs, including parking and upgrades within the current terminal, while leaving open the possibility of future expansion.

Earlier plans outlined a more comprehensive expansion of the terminal, aimed at accommodating continued passenger growth and improving capacity.

Airport officials have noted an “immediate need for additional parking,” as previously reported by the Catalyst, with a new parking garage prioritized in the airport’s Capital Improvement Plan.

The shift comes as PIE continues to see sustained passenger demand, driven largely by leisure travel and low cost carriers.

Rather than advancing a large scale expansion, the airport is moving toward a phased approach, addressing operational bottlenecks first.

Airport materials state that design work is expected to resume in spring 2026 and will include improvements to the existing terminal, along with a potential expansion north of baggage claim with additional jet bridges, but not in accordance with the original expansion plan.

Whether that constitutes a total cancellation or a “rescope” remains unclear, and airport officials were not immediately available to respond to a request for comment.

Yeah, this person below, was ‘all over it’ about 8-months ago, on a post from around August. That’s what I was wondering about that $110-MIL… I thought that was some type of use it or lose it grant. So, looks like now, they were just blowing a BUNCH of smoke all along.

110m grant funding has been approved for over 3 yrs now for terminal expansion and not a single post have been build. The airport is so rundown and it leaks when there’s a storm. The 110m budget will not be enough funding to build a second level terminal

So, now it’s not happening. Of course, they weren’t available for comments, when they have egg all over their faces. After selling everyone on this over all these years!? I mean, how embarrassing. It took them THIS LONG just to figure THIS out!? No one ever acted as if MONEY was ever the issue. That they’d been anticipating (saving) and working on this particular, specific “PLAN” all along, throughout MANY years. What a crock.

“Design Work” is expected to RESUME this spring!? So, that means that it STOPPED!? I mean, what are we doing here!? I was just about to say, how many YEARS have they been talking about and promoting this!? And, NOW it’s back to the “design” phase AGAIN. Ridiculous. What a big joke. They’ve been putting out all these photos for years now, with this grand new terminal! Now, it’s sorry, we’re not even doing it!? WHAT THE… You have got to be KIDDING ME. Just Pathetic. So, I guess, when it ‘lightnings’ then, we’ll STILL get stuck on the planes and won’t be able to board. Wonderful. They have literally been promoting this FOR YEARS. Now, it’s NOPE. Not happenin. Because, we are ‘GROWING’ too much too soon!? Yah, okay then… Make it make sense. Just think HOW MUCH time and money they have WASTED. Complete. Total. BS. But, they “said” they had soooo much money tho Lmao. Sarasota-Bradenton didn’t seem to have a problem with THEIRS. Fort Meyers. And, I was hoping for us to have a nice new modern day looking terminal, and normal airport. Ummmm, NOPE. Not anymore
