The Sound, the new amphitheater in Clearwater’s Coachman Park, will debut June 28 with a free concert from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Cheap Trick.

The hard-rocking quartet, originally from Rockford Illinois, is best known for “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” “Dream Police” and “The Flame.” To date, Cheap Trick has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Lead singer Robin Zander is a longtime resident of Safety Harbor.

Robin Taylor Zander, Zander’s singer/songwriter son, will open the 7 p.m. show.

Although the show is free, advance reservations are recommended. Click here.

With 4,000 covered seats and lawn seating for an additional 5,000, The Sound’s first regular (ticketed) season begins June 30 with Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw. Jazz artist Dave Koz performs July 1, with Peter Frampton scheduled for July 2.

What an enjoyable chat. Robin Zander is a class act Rock Star. I’ve been a fan since 8/5/79 San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Doing road trips from San Diego to San Francisco w San Bernardino. Los Angeles, Hollywood, Anaheim, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Barbara, Riverside, and Las Vegas. My sister and besties as loyal Cheap Trick road dogs yearly. Racked up close to 100 shows attended. As long as the fellas are touring gigs we’re there! Thank you for this interview.

Help me re-connect with Robin Zander. I would love to reminisce with Robin Zander. He was so kind to talk to me and my friends in Fort Pierce Florida. Allowed us backstage and told us if we show up in Fort Lauderdale we could et in free, so all 4 of us girls got to Fort Lauderdale and didn’t know how to get in so we waited in back of the building with about 100 people and here comes their limo and stops next to us and cracks the window and says wait by that door in about 15 minutes and sure enough they let us in and we sat front row and hung out back stage again. Me and my friend sat there with Robin Zander and I am not sure if I said 2 words to him lol. One of my best childhood memories and would love to talk to him. I have free tickets but not sure what that actually means if I drive all the way there with my young daughter.

I got my free tickets and not sure what it means that advance tickets have sold out? I met Robin Zanders in the 80’s when I was a kid. we hung out in Fort Pierce and Fort Lauderdale when they let us in the back stage door and gave us front row seats. Please advise me on what to expect as far as being in good seats at this concert if possible. Would love to talk to him again.
