Rain forces drone show cancellation; will be rescheduled

Mother Nature grounded the City’s celebratory drone show Sunday, the event’s organizer says.

After a day-long tech expo at the St. Pete Pier, crowds began to gather in anticipation of the 9 p.m. air show from Texas-based Sky Elements. The company had established a base at Vinoy Park, with 1,000 lighted drones positioned on the ground, fully charged and ready for takeoff. Coordinated via on-site computer, they were to take off, in staggered formation, and create pictures in the sky over the Vinoy Basin.

Four local companies will receive between $400,000 and $3.54 million to expand operations and storm-harden facilities through Pinellas County’s Employment Sites Program. 

Commissioners unanimously approved allocating $8.84 million to the four projects at their July 22 meeting without discussion. The workforce development and retention program has provided $44.6 million through seven funding rounds.
