Money’s on everyone’s mind as American Stage, like all Florida nonprofit arts organizations, deals with the recent news that the state cut its annual arts appropriations by nearly 90 percent. American Stage received a grant of less than $10,000 for 2018, down from $48,000 the year before.
Yesterday, Mayor Bob Buckhorn of Tampa announced his interest in divesting monies from the city’s employee pension fund from gun and ammo manufacturing companies. While only $300,000 of the city of Tampa’s $800 million pension portfolio currently invests in these companies, Buckhorn’s aide says he is looking to use his platform to send a message of support to the families of Parkland, Florida, where a Feb. 14th school shooting left 17 dead.
