Why one rescued St. Pete manatee couldn’t recover

When wildlife officials and student rescuers pulled an injured young manatee from the waters off St. Petersburg's Eckerd College in early June, photographs of the rescue quickly spread across social media, and local news reports chronicled the marine mammal's fight for survival. The weak and lethargic calf was suffering from a recent watercraft collision, shark bites and a severe chest infection.

Less than two weeks later, despite intensive treatment at ZooTampa, the 195-pound juvenile was euthanized.

Great Explorations museum seeks input on Discovery Center

The Great Explorations Children’s Museum has been educating and entertaining youth in St. Petersburg since 1987. Currently, the organization is developing a new Discovery Center. 

It will be a space where children can investigate engineering, space exploration, 3D printing and chemistry, among other topics. A location for the proposed initiative has not yet been selected.
