County proposing major cuts to its Parks and Rec budget

In response to a $42 million budget shortfall, Pinellas County is proposing significant cuts to the County’s Parks and Recreation budget. These are set to include all lifeguards at Fort De Soto and Sand Key, and the elimination of the Shell Key and Weedon Island Preserves.

“Unfortunately, departments across the County have been forced to make tough financial choices due to new state-imposed financial burdens,” Paul Cozzie, Director, Parks and Conservation Resources, said in a letter sent to stakeholders on Thursday.

St. Pete Chamber hosts ‘Meet the Candidates’ event

Residents and business leaders gathered Thursday evening at Tropicana Field for an opportunity to meet candidates running for elected offices across the St. Petersburg region. The event was hosted by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce.

Races represented included St. Petersburg mayor, City Council, Florida governor, the Pinellas County School Board and 6th Judicial Circuit judge. Additionally, individuals seeking seats in the Florida House of Representatives, Florida Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate attended.
