Spirit Airlines is out of business, effective today

South Florida-based Spirit Airlines will cease all operations today, following extensive efforts to restructure the business. Locally, all flights in and out of Tampa International Airport and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport have been canceled.

“Despite the Company’s efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook,” officials said in today’s announcement. “With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down.”

Peters seeks to block data centers despite state law

Pinellas County Commissioner Kathleen Peters wants to ban data centers in Pinellas County, but under current legislation, it may be impossible to stop them.

While the county has not received an official proposal to build a data center, Peters reported to the Catalyst that staff has been approached by an unnamed party interested in developing a data center somewhere along Gandy Boulevard, where the center would have easy access to water to use for evaporative cooling of its systems. Millions of gallons are required daily.
