Car-Free St. Pete relaunches, expands as Connect Pinellas

A grassroots initiative that has encouraged St. Petersburg residents and visitors to forego driving downtown since 2019 has a new moniker and mission. 

Car-Free St. Pete is now Connect Pinellas, a newly established nonprofit. The change reflects the organization’s evolution from focusing on awareness to facilitating community-driven, small infrastructure projects that help improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.

Pinellas approves $320.9 million waste-to-energy contract

The annual cost to convert Pinellas County’s refuse into electricity has increased by nearly $7 million. 

County commissioners unanimously approved a $320.85 million contract Tuesday with FCC Environmental Services to operate the Waste-to-Energy facility. The Houston-based company operates in seven states and recycled over 500,000 tons of garbage in 2024.
