Family-friendly Halloween on Central returns Sunday
Here’s another reminder that life indeed goes on, even after two devastating hurricanes.
Halloween is coming Oct. 31, whether we’re ready for it or not, and there’s a very large, free event Sunday in St. Petersburg that’s intended to remind children about the innocent fun of wearing costumes, hanging out with family and doing all kinds of trick-or-treaty stuff.
It has nothing to do with flooded homes, broken trees, loss of electricity or debris piles.
For the fourth annual Halloween on Central, from noon until 5 p.m.; 22 blocks of Central Avenue (the Grand Central and EDGE Districts) will be closed off to vehicular traffic. All of Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority’s bus lines, including the SunRunner, will operate fare-free for the duration of Halloween on Central (the east-west borders are MLK (9th Street) and 31st Street).
Dogs are welcome – in costume especially, but either way. They must be on leash and well-behaved.
There are four “mini-districts,” each with trick-or-treat candy stops for the little ones:
The EDGE District’s Kooky Spooky with DJs, dance contests, costume contests, sidewalk chalk activities, pop-up shopping and more; Radio At. Pete will be broadcasting live;.
LocalShops1’s Voodoo Vendor Village with a Halloween Market (more than 100 vendors) and food trucks;
Howl-o-Ween by the Dog Bar: Weiner Dog Races 1-3 p.m., Award Ceremony 4 p.m., Dog Costume Parade 4:30 p.m.;
Frankenpride! by St. Pete Pride has a DJ, costume contest from 12-2 p.m., 1-2 p.m. Live on Central, 2-3 p.m. Drag on Central, 3-4 p.m. Dance on Central, 4-4:15 p.m. Runway on Central, Gibbs High Marching Band.
