Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that he would appoint Julie Marcus to replace Deborah Clark following her retirement as the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections.

Marcus, who was most recently spent the last eight years as Deputy Supervisor of Elections, has worked in the Supervisor of Elections Office since 2002.

Her predecessor, Clark, retired as Supervisor of Elections March 31, and praised Marcus in her letter of resignation, asking DeSantis to appoint Marcus to fill the position. Clark served in that position for nearly 20 years. She was appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush in 2000.

Clark was known as an early champion of no-excuse mail-in ballots. As the Covid-19 pandemic leaves the economy hampered and local officials governing remotely, mail-in voting has only grown in popularity throughout the state and country.

Voting advocates like the League of Women Voters have called for all state and local officials to expand no-excuse absentee voting and mail-in ballots due to the outbreak. But mail-in ballots have met significant pushback from the Trump administration federally.

Marcus is expected to follow in the footsteps of her predecessor, and said she was “honored and humbled” by her appointment.

“Having administered more than 320 elections, my extensive institutional knowledge and hands-on experience has prepared me for what we need to do to be successful,” Marcus said. “We are mission focused.”

Marcus also mentioned Florida’s upcoming August primary, noting that it is just three months away, and that it will be quickly followed by the Nov. 3 general election, just five months away.

So we can expect continued limited early voting opportunities and locations in minority areas of the county.
