The Hustle

Name: Jon Stine (Local Longboard Company)

Posted By Gina Marks

While you've definitely heard of food trucks, you probably aren't as familiar with the idea of a mobile skate shop. Originally starting out from Jon Stein's wood shop, the demand grew and a physical retail location was created. However, last year, the Local Longboard Company decided to hit the streets and close up its physical shop. Jon partnered with Aron Retkes and made the change from stationary to riding around town. You can now find them in "Sheila," their affectionately-dubbed mobile skate truck, helping members of the Tampa Bay community meet their skating needs and coming to them with the shop.

Co-Owner, Designer & Operator

What do you do?

Local Longboard Company designs and manufactures longboards and retails our products alongside other top national brands in our full-service mobile skate shop.

Why do you do it?

It’s certainly not for financial gain. We follow our passion of designing, building, meeting great people and feeling that breeze in our faces while skating.

What was your Catalyst? (How did you get started?)

After having a downtown brick and mortar location for over four years, it was time for something new … something out of the box. The high rents and parking situations propelled us go to the people, versus having them come to us.

What’s a common misconception or unknown aspect of what you do?

We’re not only the retailers, we are the makers of a number of our products.

What’s the most challenging part of your Hustle?

Getting customers to get used to the idea of a mobile retail location. A majority of people don’t quite understand until they see it in person.

What’s the most valuable piece of business advice/insight that’s helped you?

“Show up, shut up and clean up.” Simple, but it works for most businesses.
