Looking forward: The month of August in the Arts
Who’ll be coming to a stage near you next month?
August, historically, is not a terribly busy month for the performing arts in the Tampa Bay area. It’s too hot, and the snowbirds aren’t here yet with their spending money, so things slow to a trickle. It happens every year.
Yet there are shows, and good ones, because a whole lot of us live here year-round, and steamy August or no, we like to be entertained. Preferably in the air-conditioning.
Interestingly, this month delivers a plethora of outdoor rock ‘n’ roll shows (for those about to sweat, we salute you).
Tampa’s Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre, at the Florida State Fairgrounds, is playing host to Motley Crue, Jack Johnson, John Mellencamp, Rob Zombie with Marilyn Manson, Avenged Sevenfold, 311 and others.
The BayCare Sound, Clearwater’s amphitheater, has Devo (yes, Devo), Squeeze with Adam Ant and Haircut One Hundred, and the interesting pairing of Deep Purple and Kansas.
(Here’s a tease: Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms are playing the BayCare Sound Sept. 1.)
A few other concerts to take note of: The Chilean singer/songwriter Mon Laferte, who performs in Spanish, is at the Mahaffey Theater Aug. 5. Her music isn’t salsa or cumbia or any other Latin dance style; rather it’s rich, poetic and colorful indie rock. She’s got a cool band, too. Her best-known albums are La Trenza, Norma, Sola con Mis Monstruos, Autopoiética and the recent Femme Fatale.
England’s Mumford & Sons, on the road behind their sixth album, Prizefighter, will stop in at Benchmark International Arena.
Surely somebody cares that conservative keyboardist Jonathan Cain (of Journey), who’s married to the President’s spiritual advisor, has a date at the Central Park Performing Arts Center (in Largo) Aug. 22.
Blues legend Buddy Guy, 90, will perform Aug. 23 at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
