While Peter Schorsch holds many titles — blogger, consultant and editor-in-chief of Florida Politics, the most influential political website in the Sunshine State — the one which he’s proudest is “husband and father.” That’s what makes his new podcast so exciting: Peter’s co-host, a woman every bit as accomplished as he is — his wife, Michelle Todd Schorsch. “He Said, She Said” has Peter and Michelle — previously a respected political consultant, now the CEO of the bustling Schorsch household — discussing the driving topics of the day, especially how politics really goes down in Florida. But the political talk is just a jumping off point to a wide-range of subject matter, from the latest in pop culture to some very strong opinions on family life and parenting. Listen in to hear how one political couple balances it all.

Michelle's surprise announcement; #FlaPol goes to Israel; Joe Gruters talks a consequential Session; John Lux on the Sunshine State film industry and Disney cruise

On this episode of He Said, She Said, Peter and Michelle have a jam-packed lineup of guests, but you'll have to wait til the very end to hear the biggest news of the episode. First, they welcome A.G. Gancarski, the Jacksonville-based Florida Politics reporter freshly returned from his trip to Israel with Ron DeSantis to recap the highlights. Then, Sen. Joe Gruters of Sarasota talks the 2019 legislative session. Finally, John Lux of Florida Films talk Disney cruising and the Florida film industry.

Key Insights

  • In a jam-packed episode, Michelle & Peter talk to Florida Politics' A.G. Gancarski, Senator Joe Gruters, and Film Florida's John Lux.
  • Michelle & Peter break down state Rep. Mike Hill's homophobic comments at a Pensacola town hall and compare his reaction to the late Senator John McCain's response to derogatory comments about then-President Barack Obama.
  • Peter on Republican reaction to Rep. Hill: "By making themselves the Steve Kings of Florida Politics, they're distracting from what was a very consequential and important legislative session. Every word that is dedicated to the Mike Hills of the world is a distraction from the tax cuts or the education reform movements or anything like that."
  • Florida Politics sent Gancarski (its Jacksonville reporter) to Israel on Governor DeSantis' business development trip.
  • Day-to-day in Israel: Reporters were picked up from hotels between 6 a.m.; went wherever Gov. DeSantis went; wrapped up at around 9 p.m. every night.
  • Gancarski on DeSantis: “Ron DeSantis spent much of his early career in the Fox News green room. He learned to give good quotes. You don't get repeat invitations on Hannity or wherever else if you don't give good quotes and if you don't energetically advocate for your position.”
  • Western Wall: “Because it was a tourist attraction, it was like every other tourist attraction even though it among the most hallowed ground in the world ... The commemoration of history is always business ... but being there, putting my prayer in the wall and knowing that I was part of a tradition that spanned millennia was very awe inspiring.”
  • Post-Session: The governor has extended the post-session period of the 2019 legislative session. (We explain what that means.)
  • Sen. Joe Gruters, Republican of Sarasota and Charlotte counties, joins the podcast. He talks up his legislative approach: conservatism mixed with pragmatism. To him, compromise is not a dirty word.
  • Gruters’ recap of the session: "When you have the combination of the three leaders that we have in Galvano, Oliva, and Gov. DeSantis ... three individuals willing to put some of their personal agenda aside for the greater good of our state and how they wanted to shape Florida for future generations."
  • Gruters names his most consequential bills: Anti-semitism; Citizen initiatives; Sanctuary cities.
  • Also: Gruters and his family are taking their first Disney Cruise. Michelle & Peter give their best unsolicited Disney Cruise advice.
  • Gruters talks about the Trump re-election bid and his second-run announcement coming up June 18 in Orlando.
  • Peter and Michelle recap Southern Charm drama with Kathryn Dennis and her many boyfriends.
  • Michelle and daughter Ella were extras on a Hallmark movie, “Love in the Sun.” Michelle breaks down their 13-hour day on set and Ella's first paycheck.
  • John Lux from Film Florida talks about the film industry in Florida (and a little bit on Disney cruising).
  • Lux says independent film and commercial productions are thriving in Florida, but from an economic standpoint those productions have smaller budgets and smaller windows of work. He says traditional films are still challenging to attract to Florida, because it does not have a program to entice larger projects.
  • Michelle & Peter talk abortion bans in numerous states and asks Lux how these bans might affect the remaining film/TV industry in Florida.
  • Lux proves to be even more committed to Disney cruising than Michelle & Peter. He's been on 24 (!) Disney cruises and breaks down his best trips and tips.
  • Michelle makes a surprising announcement about her party registration.
