Welcome to Florida: Zora Neale Hurston

Welcome to Florida: Zora Neale Hurston

This week's episode begins with a song from Zora Neale Hurston, "Shove it Over." Throughout this week's show we'll be hearing songs from Hurston which can be found in the State Archives of Florida. To learn more about Zora Neale Hurston, Craig and Chadd Scott talk to Kristy Anderson, writer and director of the documentary film, "Zora Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun," which you can watch on Amazon. Zora Neale Hurston was a Florida author and anthropologist. While a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, she spent little time there, Her novels explored the lives of ex-slaves living in the Deep South. Although she died penniless in Ft. Pierce, Florida in 1960, with her books out of print, Black feminists resurrected her work, particularly the 1937 novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God."

WOW! So very glad I stumbled on this FABULOUS FLORIDA podcast with Catalyst! Although I have lived in Pinellas County for 27 years, finding genuine voices interested in not only protecting Florida's natural environment but also Florida's cultural treasures in art, film, music, literature and dance as well, are far and few in between. Pittman & Anderson are the boots on the ground! This is a coincidental gem as I just watched the Zora Neale Hurston documentary film mentioned last night! I am a devout fan of Hurston's and a Floridaphile to the utmost degree. This was entertaining as well as informative; I had the chance to hear Zora sing and learn about Hip Camp! Can't wait for the next episode and I am binge watching the previous episodes! Thanks!
