In February 2020, Jenny Miller (left) and Katelyn Grady were joined by Chris Steinocher, president of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, and Mayor Rick Kriseman in cutting the ribbon for the new Body Electric Athletic Co.

The owners of The Body Electric Yoga Co. cut the ribbon Friday on their second site, The Body Electric Athletic Co.

The nearly 16,000-square-foot facility, at 655 31st St. S. in the Warehouse Arts District, was packed with people who turned out to see the three large studios, an open gym for members, a café and childcare facilities.

Charge of the Soul LLC, led by co-owners Katelyn Grady and Jenny Miller, paid $840,000 for the building in July 2019, and the company has put at least $650,000 in renovations into the project, Pinellas County property records show.

Miller told the St. Pete Catalyst that she and Grady looked for two years for a building that would accommodate everything they wanted for the new business.

The new business represents more than a financial investment, Mayor Rick Kriseman said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“We talk a lot in St. Petersburg, and I have to thank my Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin who’s led the charge on this issue, about creating and helping us all to be a healthy St. Pete … Thank you for doing this in South St. Petersburg and creating equity and making sure that all areas of our city have an opportunity to be healthy,” Kriseman said.

Chris Steinocher, CEO of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, said the event helped celebrate the “spirit of entrepreneurship.”

“When you get an entrepreneur excited about the community, they’ll bring everyone else along. And when they bring everyone else, they start employing other people too, so you start creating jobs. Then they’ll take on property that nobody loved for years and years, and they put some love to it. Then they hire people who can make that love come true, so there’s more jobs created. It’s not just Body Electric they took care of, they took care of St. Pete and they’ll continue to do that going forward,” Steinocher said.

The new location will focus on “mindful group fitness,” or bringing yoga philosophy to the group fitness world, Miller said. It will offer 35-40 mindful fitness classes around conditioning, strength, core focus, self-care, recovery, oxygen optimization and loaded yoga.

Grady thanked the Body Electric family, who she said gave them the courage to take big leaps.

“We want to hold space for you to feel like you can have courage too, to do big things and be vulnerable and explore safely,” Grady said.

Wannemacher Jensen Architects designed the project, which was financed by Bank OZK.
