The community pauses to remember Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most years, celebrations of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. include lively parades, group worship ceremonies and community service projects. But while Covid-19 may have pushed many of these festivities into the virtual world, it didn’t stop local leaders from taking to social media to honor King and his mission Monday.

Ken Welch, the longtime Pinellas County Commissioner who recently announced his candidacy for mayor of St. Petersburg, attended a virtual MLK Breakfast hosted by commissioner Rene Flowers which featured a keynote address by St. Petersburg College President Tonjua Williams.

City council vice chair Gina Driscoll, who is seeking re-election later this year, shared a video from a virtual candlelight vigil hosted by the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum Sunday evening and said it was “an honor” to be part of it.

One of Driscoll’s colleagues, Brandi Gabbard, spent her MLK Day morning participating in the St. Pete Youth Farm Workday, where volunteers helped construct a new farm in South St. Petersburg. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past 25 years.


Mayor Rick Kriseman urged residents never to forget King’s legacy and encouraged them to build on his work both nationally and locally.

Even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, fresh off a win against the New Orleans Saints that sends them to the NFC championship game versus the Green Bay Packers Sunday, took a moment to recognize King.

Today, we celebrate the life & lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
