TIETAN awardee: Peerfit named Startup of the Year

Tampa-based Peerfit, an exercise technology company that was recently acquired, will be named the Startup of the Year at the TIECON Tampa Bay 2022 awards. 

Peerfit’s founder, Ed Buckley, is continuing his role as CEO as Los Angeles-based FitOn, which describes itself as the No. 1 fitness app and digital fitness platform, acquired Peerfit earlier this year. 

Peerfit was founded in 2011 and has been one of the more high-profile startups in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area.

It has raised $47.9 million from investors over several funding rounds, according to Crunchbase, including a $10 million bridge round in January that was led by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and Virgo Investment Group, a San Francisco-based investment firm.

Peerfit connects employers, brokers and insurance carriers to local fitness experiences and wellness services. It has two main product lines. Its original business, simply called Peerfit, which is for people under 65 with commercial or employer-provided health insurance coverage. Peerfit Move is provided through Medicare Advantage plans. 

The TIECON Tampa Bay 2022 event will be held at Julian B. Lane Park in downtown Tampa on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

At TIECON (formerly called TiECON), TIE Tampa Bay will also recognize and present the TIETAN awards for Angel Investor of the Year, Super Entrepreneur of the Year, Social Entrepreneur of the Year and Community Champion of the Year.

Mitchel Laskey, the co-founder and general managing partner of DeepWork Capital, a venture capital firm investing in early-stage companies in Florida, will be awarded Angel Investor of the Year.
