Gulfport, FL – Multi-award-winning Tonalism master Larry Maynard will be honored with a solo exhibition at Brenda McMahon Gallery this February, with new works unveiled at an opening on Friday, February 7th, from 6-9 PM. Maynard’s work is the latest in a string of decorated artists to be celebrated at the gallery and takes place during a busy month for the arts in Gulfport.

Maynard has won over a dozen awards throughout the Southeast for his Tonalist landscapes, which feature an overall tone of colored atmosphere or mist. His use of dark, neutral hues such as gray, brown or blue, have become the hallmark of his work, drawing comparisons to Tonalism masters of the past such as George Inness and James McNeill Whistler.

“My use of natural light and mastery of color create an aura of emotion that captivates the audience and carries with them a sense of tranquility,” says Maynard. “My work portrays the intimate beauty of the environment, giving it a new perspective. Through my art, I hope to engage the audience and trigger their own emotional journey.”

Maynard’s creative career began during his time in the United States Navy, where he advanced his previously learned photographic skills while traveling abroad. After his return to America, he studied at the Chautauqua Art Institute under renowned artist George Gambsky. He became so fond of his photographic portraiture and natural landscapes that he began painting his subjects instead of photographing them. After many years of learning how to paint and finding his voice, he discovered the style of Tonalism and has been in love with it ever since.

“While each painting may be simplistic in its color palate, it is full of emotion and moody vibes,” continues Maynard. “I maintain soft atmospheric edges while focusing on the tone and, more importantly, the emotion that lies within my artwork.”

Brenda McMahon Gallery’s opening of Maynard’s exhibition will feature live music by St. Petersburg jazz icon Henry Ashwood. For more information on Maynard’s award-winning work, visit larrymaynardartist.com and follow his Instagram at @larrymaynardartist.
