St. Petersburg, FL (Wednesday, April 24, 2019) – More than 1200 videos created by teens to inspire their peers to drive safely and avoid risky behaviors were submitted in the TeenDrive365 Video Challenge by Toyota and Discovery Education.

Among them was local eleventh grader Caleb K. of Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Fla. Caleb’s video, “Don’t Recline Behind the Wheel,“ and the other ten finalist videos can be viewed at teendrive365inschool.com/vote. The public voted for their favorite video through April 23, 2019.

In addition to the People’s Choice winner, several other prize winners – including a Grand Prize of $15,000 – will be chosen by a panel of judges comprised of community leaders, educators, communications experts and Toyota representatives.

Representatives from Discovery and Toyota will be on the Shorecrest campus on April 29, 2019, to honor Caleb on his achievement thus far. Local media is welcome to attend the event in Shorecrest’s Janet Root Theatre at 1:15pm. A campus map and directions may be found here: https://www.shorecrest.org/contact-us

The Shorecrest Upper School curriculum is supportive of creativity through a variety of visual arts classes ranging from intro level through AP, among them digital filmmaking. Bill Leavengood (Shorecrest class of 1978) and Richard Rho are Caleb’s teachers for this class for the second year.

About Caleb’s contest entry, Leavengood said, “Caleb is a clever, skillful and self-motivated young filmmaker who always sets out to achieve at a higher level than the class assignment requires.” Bill noted. “I am so impressed how he was able to get a familiar message across in his video submission to TeenDriver365 with such creativity and imagination without making it cliche or didactic.”

“Caleb’s passion and talent are so apparent through his video. He impressed the judges and Toyota representatives across the board.” said Lauren DeNu, Director of Partner Success, Discovery Education. “We had over 1200 entries from a lot of very talented students, but Caleb’s rose the top. It really stood out.”

“Sparking a national conversation about driver safety in schools, the TeenDrive365 Video Challenge has empowered students to use their creativity and ingenuity to inspire others to make responsible choices behind the wheel,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education.
