Dining for Art, A Grand Mingling, and the Historic Kenwood Public Art Initiative
When loads of artists live in your neighborhood, but you don’t see any art, what do you do? If you’re Historic Kenwood – Neighborhood of the Arts and home to the Artist Enclave of Historic Kenwood – you create a public art initiative and a master plan. Art costs money, so how do you afford it? Well, for starters, you have some really good parties…and invite the public! All of the proceeds from these events support the Historic Kenwood Public Art Initiative, infusing creativity throughout the neighborhood.
Featured Event: A Grand Mingling!
On Sunday, October 21, the Historic Kenwood Public Art Committee will host A Grand Mingling. This 3:00 – 6:00 pm party will be held at Kenwood Gables Boutique Bed and Breakfast, which is just opening after a full year’s renovation of this important 1934 Tudor Revival home. This event will be the capstone for Dining for Art, a series of more intimate parties held in homes throughout Historic Kenwood. Champagne and desserts created by a five-star pastry chef will delight guests. Kenwood’s own Doug Wilkins will provide classical and jazz music. Twelve artists, all members of the Historic Kenwood Artist Enclave (kenwoodartistenclave.org), will have works of art on display including sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics, stained glass, mosaic, and crafts. Most will be present to visit with guests and talk about their art. Several of the artists exhibit nationally. Tickets are available online at https://www.historickenwood.org/event/grand-mingling/.
Dining for Art – Delicious Food, Creative Themes
Last year, Historic Kenwood neighbors hosted six parties. Guests and hosts alike had so much fun that this year the number of events was doubled. Themes this year include Tapas! Tapas! Tapas!; an Italian Dinner in the Garden; a Seminole Park Supper Club; a Roaring Twenties Speakeasy, and more. Gatherings of six to 16 are held in Historic Kenwood homes full of charm and character. Each will feature a neighborhood artist. Creative Event Partners Mark Crane and Michelene Everett are collaborating with the Historic Kenwood Public Art Committee to make this a truly memorable event. Historic Kenwood Public Art Initiative
The neighborhood’s first public art project, completed in 2017, was the transformation of seven drab park benches into works of art. The committee commissioned artists and completely funded the project through Dining for Art proceeds and Durable Coatings’ donation of paint. This year, proceeds will go toward creative finials to top the neighborhood’s more than 120 sign markers. Future years will see art topped pedestals throughout the neighborhood, a mural in the dog park, and a signature work of public art in Seminole Park.
