The Tampa Jazz Club opens a new season with an afternoon featuring LA LUCHA & FRIENDS, on Sunday, September 11 in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City. The 3:00 concert, part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series, will present this outstanding trio, along with vocalist ONA KIREI, featuring guitarist LaRUE NICKELSON and saxophonist MIKE DiRUBBO.
 
LA LUCHA – three best friends who bring a telepathic interplay to everything they do — have been a focal point of the Bay Area jazz scene for well over a decade. Pianist JOHN O’LEARY, bassist ALEJANDRO ARENAS, and drummer MARK FEINMAN have been prominently featured at the Suncoast and Sarasota Jazz Festivals and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, and their most recent CD, ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World,’ with several major jazz guest artists, received extensive national airplay.
 
Since relocating from Barcelona, vocalist ONA KIREI has captivated Bay Area listeners. She and La Lucha have a magical connection, as shown on her new debut cd, ‘Mirage.’ This summer also brings us ‘Daring Flowers,’ by Orilla, the duo ensemble of ONA and the trio’s bassist ALEJANDRO ARENAS, and listeners will be treated to songs from both of these brand new albums at the September 11 concert.
 
Two great instrumentalists round out the line-up: The remarkable guitarist LaRUE NICKELSON, who has been on the Jazz Faculty at USF for nearly 20 years and recorded widely, returns to the Mainstage. And saxophonist MIKE DiRUBBO, a protégé of the legendary Jackie McLean, is now in the Bay Area after years of prominence on the New York scene. We’re happy to introduce Mike’s artistry to the Tampa Jazz Club audience with this concert.
