Historic local theatre launches $100-for-100 fundraising drive and opens the holiday season with A Christmas Carol
ST. PETERSBURG, FL — December 12, 2025 — St. Petersburg City Theatre, the city’s oldest continuously operating community theatre, proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary this December. To honor a century of artistic excellence and community spirit, the theatre is launching a special “$100 for 100 Years” fundraising drive and kicking off its milestone season with a cherished holiday classic — A Christmas Carol.
Founded in 1925 as the Sunshine Players, the theatre has grown and evolved alongside the city itself. From humble beginnings producing one-night performances to becoming a cornerstone of Tampa Bay’s cultural life, St. Petersburg City Theatre has remained dedicated to enriching the lives and collective spirit of the community through local productions and educational programs.
“We are so grateful for the community partners and supporters who have kept this theatre thriving for 100 years,” said Lisa Marone of St. Petersburg City Theatre. “This centennial is not just about our history — it’s about investing in the next generation of artists and audiences who will carry our mission forward.”
The theatre’s long and storied history includes milestones such as purchasing its first permanent home in the 1940s, building the city’s first dedicated theatre facility on 31st Street South in 1958, and expanding youth education through The Academy at City Theatre. Today, the theatre continues to provide a space where performers, students, and audiences of all ages come together to celebrate the performing arts.
As part of the 100th Anniversary celebration, patrons are invited to join the “$100 for 100 Years” campaign, which supports facility improvements, youth programming, and ongoing productions that keep local theatre alive and accessible.
“A Christmas Carol” opens on December 12, 2025, marking the beginning of the holiday season and the last of the theatre’s 100th Season of performances.
