Event to Include Visit From the Ambassador of Greece to the United States

WHO: Officials from Nova Southeastern University, H.E. Alexandra Papadopoulou, Ambassador of Greece to the United States, Drs. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel and other dignitaries, elected officials and community members

WHAT: Ceremony to unveil and plant a cutting from Tree of Hippocrates in Greece

WHERE: NSU Tampa Bay Regional Campus, 3400 Gulf to Bay Blvd., Clearwater

WHEN: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, November 18

WHY: Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is about to join an exclusive club as it welcomes a cutting from the descendant of the original plane tree or sycamore tree of Hippocrates, for its Tampa Bay Regional Campus.

“This is truly a high honor for our university, and we are thrilled to be sharing in such an important part of history,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President and CEO. “The fact NSU is going to now have a tie to the ‘father of medicine’ is both humbling and inspiring. Eventually NSU students will be able to sit in the shade of this tree like students of Hippocrates of Kos did 2,500 years ago.”

Cuttings from the tree have been outplanted at educational institutions and health care organizations across the globe, and now that list is growing by one – NSU.

Hippocrates was a Greek physician of the Age of Pericles and is considered the father of medicine. According to legend, Hippocrates taught his students under the branches of the original tree approximately 2,500 years ago. The existing Hippocrates Tree, estimated to be 500 years old, is located in Kos, Greece, near where the original tree once stood.

A number of dignitaries and members of the community are expected to attend, including Tampa Bay residents and philanthropists Dr. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel as well as H.E. Alexandra Papadopoulou, Ambassador of Greece to the United States who will join NSU President and CEO Dr. George Hanbury and other NSU officials for the celebration.
