Two new clinical trials aim to improve outcomes for those in treatment

PINELLAS PARK, Florida – Operation PAR, Inc, a Pinellas County substance use prevention and treatment organization and a member of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network has been selected to participate in two new clinical research projects focused on the treatment of opioid use disorder.
The Clinical Trials Network (CTN) provides a way in which NIDA, treatment researchers, and community-based service providers work together toward new treatment options in community-level clinical practice.
The first clinical research trial beginning in October 2021 is CTN-0100 titled Optimizing Retention, Duration, and Discontinuation Strategies of Opioid Use Disorder Pharmacology. This study will test strategies to improve treatment retention and improve outcomes for those already in treatment who want to stop medication assisted treatment. Operation PAR will be one of twenty sites across the nation in this five-year research project.
The second research study is CTN-00112 titled Optimal Policies to Improve Methadone Maintenance Adherence Long-term (OPTIMMAL Study). This research will examine important clinical and policy questions regarding regulations governing the practice of methadone maintenance in the United States by reviewing pre-COVID-19 policies and more flexible methadone maintenance policies instituted to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. Operation PAR is one of ten sites chosen in the United States for this important study.
Operation PAR has been involved in research to advance the field of substance use treatment as a member of the NIDA CTN Florida Node Alliance based at the University of Miami since the Clinical Trials Network’s inception more than 18 years ago.
