Seedfunders Invests in Tech Startup Fjord Weather to Revolutionize Weather Reporting and Forecasting at Sea

St. Petersburg, FL- David Chitester, the founder and CEO of the investment firm Seedfunders,
announced today that the company has made an investment in Fjord Weather, a technology startup
which addresses the need for better weather data on the water for both commercial and recreational
mariners.
While Weather Underground™ monitors a network of over 200,000 privately-placed terrestrial weather
stations across the country, there is no comparable system on the oceans, where hundreds of thousands
of recreational and commercial vessels operate every year. This means that more than 70% of the earth
has no network of real-time, GPS-tagged, surface weather data. Existing systems consist almost entirely
of the sparsely placed coastal, government-run, NOAA buoy network. And, satellites and air reporting
systems are not capable of reporting weather at sea level. Fjord Weather solves this problem by
equipping all vessels with their patent pending weather monitoring and reporting platform. Like Waze™
reports traffic on the roads, Fjord will report the weather at sea.
David Chitester, Seedfunders’ CEO, stated, “We are excited to join this seed round for Fjord Weather.
An additional benefit is the fact that the company, although headquartered in Connecticut, has agreed
to open an office in St. Petersburg in conjunction with our investment.” Kevin Moore, a partner in
Seedfunders, added, “As a captain myself, I recognized the need for this type of weather reporting
system. The idea and concept is simply brilliant. It has the potential to not only prevent property loss at
sea, but also save lives; it will be well-received by the maritime industry.”
According to Fjord Weather founder Drew Lambert, “Fjord addresses a pain point in the maritime
community: access to real-time weather data on the water, from boats in your proximity and extending
beyond the current network of NOAA buoys. Fjord Weather turns boats on the water into real-time,
GPS-tagged weather data points. This will improve safety and enjoyment on the water for all mariners,
both recreational and commercial. Fjord’s network will provide both “early warning” signals from boats
experiencing heavy weather, as well as providing better data to predictive models, resulting in more
accurate maritime forecasts.”
