The Boys of Winter: Half Century Softball Club Nears 93rd Season

In a city known for sunshine and salt air, a different kind of tradition has been quietly building for nearly a century. As the Half Century Softball Club approaches its remarkable 93rd season, the spirit of camaraderie and competition remains as vibrant as it was when the club first took the field in 1933.
Open to players aged 49 and older, the club has become a staple of the St. Petersburg sports community. With a 60-game season stretching from mid-October through mid-April, the league culminates in a competitive playoff series and a highly anticipated awards banquet. The catered dinner, attended by players and their guests, celebrates not only the season’s athletic accomplishments but also the bonds formed on and off the field.
Composed of enough players to field four full teams, the club meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the season for nine innings of spirited play. But the game is just the beginning. Many players linger after games to socialize, and the friendships built between innings often extend well beyond the diamond.
“Softball might bring us together, but it’s the friendships that keep us coming back,” one longtime member shared. “We play, we laugh, and we support each other—on and off the field.”
Beyond the regular season, members stay active throughout the summer months with batting practice and occasional pick-up games at North Shore Park. These informal sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and all are welcome to join.
The club’s influence extends into the community as well, with members frequently seen golfing, boating, playing pickleball, or simply enjoying each other’s company around downtown St. Petersburg. It’s a testament to the club’s enduring mission: to foster friendship, fitness, and fun well into life’s later innings.
Registration for the upcoming season begins at the end of August, and new players are always encouraged to join.
