As the days get longer and temperatures rise in the Sunshine City, summer presents us with a golden opportunity to make a positive impact. One of the most fulfilling ways to improve our community is by supporting local nonprofits. We’re back with another five ways we can kick off summer with a strong commitment to giving back and making a difference.

Put your junk drawer to use at Saturday’s Gadgets for Good. St. Pete College is collecting unused gadgets to support members of the local community who do not have access to technology. Bring your old laptop, tablet, cellphone, computer, or any other electronic you are not using. Volunteers will recycle it and use a portion of the proceeds to donate fully refurbished computers to kids and families in the community.

Become a vet tech for a day at St. Petersburg College’s “Believe and Belong in Veterinary Medicine” Saturday event, which educates children ages 12 through 15 about all aspects of veterinary medicine. The goal is to reach kids from groups that are currently underrepresented in veterinary medicine (BIPOC, men, LGBTQIA+). The event will feature mentors from around the country from diverse backgrounds, so children attending the event can see representation from many different communities. Support our local artists at St. Pete’s Second Saturday Artwalk this weekend. Head to Creative Clay’s website to learn how you can support talented local artists with disabilities, educational and vocational programs, events and galleries year-round. And check out Creative Clay’s Good Folk Gallery, at 1846 1st Ave S. The current Performing Arts exhibit features paintings of performing artists – past, present and popular – by the artists of Creative Clay. The artists receive a 50% commission on all works sold.

Get flexible and celebrate our local LGBTQIA+ community with Pride Yoga. Beach Town Yoga is hosting an all-level yoga class at the studio at 131 22nd St. South, at 10 a.m. Saturday. The class is hosted by yogi Crystal Kage, with a guest appearance by drag queen Adriana Sparkle. The class is donation-based, and all proceeds support St. Pete Pride. No need to sign up ahead of time; just show up a little early to register at the door. Donations to St. Pete Pride go directly towards the organization’s mission of strengthening St. Petersburg’s legacy of love and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.

Share your story for future generations. Are you a longtime resident of the Lealman district, or were you born and raised here? We are collecting Lealman memories for our cultural history project to be shared with friends, neighbors, and future generations of this vibrant community. We want to preserve the community’s local history through written and spoken stories; landmarks such as buildings, parks, restaurants, or businesses; and traditions such as food, festivals, and other events of the community or of individual families. Share your memories and experiences of local culture and traditions. For more information, or to book a time to share, click here.
