Who was behind those fireworks in downtown St. Pete Tuesday night?

People in downtown St. Petersburg were treated to a random fireworks display Tuesday night.

Maybe Tuesday night’s mysterious fireworks display was tied to the unveiling of the First Flight monument at the St. Pete Pier. Perhaps it was a test run for New Year’s Eve. Or it could have been Tom Brady christening his new yacht.

These were just a few of the possible explanations shared on Facebook around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when random booming sounds rang out downtown, causing widespread speculation among residents and general distress among the canine community.

As it turned out, all these guesses – some of which were made in jest – were incorrect. The fireworks show, which lasted about three minutes, was actually being shot for a promotional video for a local company. The Catalyst reached out to the company and they asked us to keep their identity under wraps for now. However, they assured us that the display is part of bigger things to come in January, and we’ll be sure to share them with you then. Stay tuned, but for now, enjoy the show…

In lieu of First Night? Filming in advance for a virtual celebration?
