Your daily dose of levity: ‘My Sweet Dumb Brain’, ‘Healing’, ‘Armchair Expert’

Today, I’m grounding myself in gratitude. I am thankful for a comfortable home, a flexible job, a strong and healthy body, a dog who sleeps like a human and stares daggers at my back, waiting for me to finish working, and a city like St. Petersburg, where I can step outside and never wonder if I need a jacket.

We’re sharing what we’re reading, watching, doing and listening to … the things that bring levity to our own lives. We’ll also share random things we’re talking about, laughing about and smiling about on social media, in pop culture and beyond. We encourage you to share your daily sources of levity with us in the comments or on social media.

What we’re reading…

Today’s reads: A newsletter, murder mysteries, nonfiction sociology and and article from the Harvard Business Review.

  • Katie Hawkins-Gaar’s newsletter, My Sweet Dumb Brain. This St. Pete local writes about life’s up and downs, grief, love, anxiety and much more. She puts together two newsletters weekly for free subscribers and even more content for paid subscribers. She never fails to deliver an authentic, timely read to this writer’s inbox when I need it most.
  • That Discomfort You’re Feeling Is Grief, by Scott Berinato. This article delves into the feeling of anticipatory grief associated with future uncertainty, and it feels grounding in a time when it’s hard to put a name to the complex emotions we’re going through collectively.
  • The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz. “New York Times bestselling author of Magpie Murders and Moriarty Anthony Horowitz has yet again brilliantly reinvented the classic crime novel, this time writing a fictional version of himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes.”
  • Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don’t Know by Malcolm Gladwell. “Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Outliers, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers – and why they often go wrong.”

What we’re listening to…

Yesterday, we mostly focused on music, but today we’ve got a little bit of everything. Some healing tracks, more work from home vibes, and tools for good habits.

  • Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert. The entire podcast collection is a surprisingly smart foray into human behavior, and the lives of celebrities, thinkers and influential people of our time. Enjoy the recent episode featuring BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits – and challenge yourself to incorporate some of those habits into your own life.

  • Todd Rundgren’s album, Healing. “A beautiful work,” says Culture Editor Bill DeYoung, “and its subject matter – healing, healers and the power of compassion – has never been more important.”

  • Bonobo’s album, Migration. This one is clutch for working from home. Need to drown out your partner, roommate, kids or animals while you get some deep work in? This is your playlist.

  • Leon Bridges’ album, Coming Home. This album will sail you away to another time and place. No pandemic thoughts to be found here.
