Your weekend arts forecast: Classical music is back
The dearth of classical music options in the bay area is always felt most strongly in the summertime, when The Florida Orchestra and our two resident opera companies are on hiatus. It’s one hot, dry slog.
Happily, there’s an oasis up ahead. Thanks to Curator of Public Programs Margaret Murray, the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg’s Marly Music Series returns Sunday (recitals and concerts are held in the museum’s 5,184-square-foot Marly Room).
The 2 p.m. performance features cellist Anita Graef and pianist Louise Chan, both nationally renowned touring musicians.
Their two-hour program includes Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, by Robert Schumann; Three Preludes for Cello and Piano by George Gershwin/arr. Jascha Heifetz; Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 58 by Felix Mendelssohn; Amy Beach’s Five Pieces for Cello and Piano; and Sonata in A Major, M. 8 by Cesar Franck.

Javed Ali
Hot on the heels of two sold-out Straz Center performances by Indian composer and musician A.R. Rahman in early August comes a Ruth Eckerd Hall concert from popular Hindi vocalist Javed Ali. He’s what’s known in film circles as a playback singer – he dubs the singing voices for actors in Bollywood movies.
Ali, performing Friday, has 2.5 million Facebook followers.

Friday is bossa nova night at the Palladium, as singer/songwriter Daniela Soledade celebrates the release of her album Pretty World. Friday’s band includes guitarist Nate Najar, pianist Patrick Bettison, drummer Jean Bolduc, bassist Joe Porter and percussionist Alvon Griffin. Brazilian music legends Roberto Menscal (guitar) and Antonio Adolpho (piano) will guest. Info and tickets here.

Bringing the yuks

Saturday brings another edition of Girls Night Out, the all-female comedy revue, to the Palladium. Performers are Helen Keaney, Catherine Maloney and Lindsay Glazer, and tickets are here.
Theater stages
The ThinkTank Theatre for Young Audiences drama Exhibits in the Zoo is in its final weekend at Stageworks Theatre, Tampa. The story of a mute Polish boy who discovers a Nazi soldier’s camera during World War II, the play is onstage at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. ThinkTank’s Playwrights Festival continues with a staged reading of Star Struck at 5 p.m. Saturday. For more info, and tickets, click here.
At St. Pete’s freeFall Theatre, it’s the penultimate weekend for Rose and Walsh, by Neil Simon. Extraordinarily well-acted by a finely-tuned quartet, the comedy/drama is onstage tonight at 7, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday (there is no performance Friday). Info and tickets are here.
The drama Something Clean continues at Studio Grand Central, in downtown St. Pete, with showtimes at 7:30 tonight, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Details and tickets here.
