Blue-green algal bloom returns to Pinellas beaches
June 27, 2024 - Pinellas County Government alerted residents to the presence of Trichodesmium along area beaches in a Tuesday social media post. The blue-green algae, commonly found in tropical and subtropical waters during the summer, causes water discoloration. According to the post, the local strain is “not known to be harmful to people or marine life.” The county will continue monitoring the algal bloom with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute's help.
