Florida evictions, foreclosures on hold one more month

July 30, 2020 - Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis once again has extended the statewide moratorium on evictions and foreclosures. The moratorium was set to expire Aug. 1, but the governor signed an executive order Wednesday extending it to Sept. 1. DeSantis initially suspended evictions and foreclosures on April 2 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and has extended the order several times since then. Unlike earlier orders, the most recent one says mortgage foreclosure and eviction relief is limited to single-family mortgagers and residential tenants adversely impacted by the Covid-19 emergency. It defines adversely impacted as loss of employment, diminished wages or business income, or other monetary loss realized during the emergency and directly impacting the ability of a single-family mortgagor to make mortgage payments or of a tenant to make rent payments. The latest order said it does not apply to foreclosures or evictions unrelated to non-payment of mortgage or rent and all payments are due when an individual is no longer adversely affected by the emergency.
