Florida unemployment claims double from a week ago

July 16, 2020 - There were 129,408 first-time claims for unemployment benefits filed by Florida residents in the week ended July 11, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Labor. That's almost double the 66,941 initial claims filed by Floridians a week earlier. Unemployments claims had been trending down and the reason for the latest increase was not immediately clear. Nationally, there were 1.3 million initial unemployment claims, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's revised level, the Labor Department said. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 11.9 percent for the week ending July 4, a decrease of 0.3 percentage point from the previous week's revised rate, the Labor Department said.
