Former Tampa Bay Times CEO Andrew Barnes dies

April 24, 2026 - Andrew Barnes, former Poynter Institute chairman and Tampa Bay Times CEO, died Thursday at the age of 86. The journalist first began to work at the Times in 1973. Barnes would eventually become editor and president in 1984. He was named the CEO of the Times Publishing Company and chair of the Poynter Institute, the nonprofit educational institution that owns the publication, in 1988. Barnes retired from the positions in 2004.
