United Airlines warns it will layoff workers at Tampa International

July 23, 2020 - United Airlines could cut 109 jobs at Tampa International Airport beginning in October. The jobs include customer service representatives, ramp service employees, flight attendants and line technicians. United (Nasdaq: UAL) cited the devastating impact on travel demand from the Covid-19 pandemic in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification sent to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The airline said it has lost billions of dollars since April and it does not expect demand to return to normal until there is a vaccine for the virus. United has offered voluntary programs to reduce payroll expense, which it said would give it the flexibility to snap back quickly when demand returns. If that effort isn’t enough, United said it would take other steps such as workforce reductions to reduce labor expenses.
