Preserve the 'Burg is pleased to announce the recent appointment of a new Executive Director, and she might look familiar! In August, the Board of Directors named Monica Kile to our top staff position. A dedicated city booster, Monica was Preserve the ‘Burg’s first Executive Director from 2013-2015 when we were called St. Petersburg Preservation. Monica returns after directing the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Eckerd College and working on special projects with organizations like The Palladium Theater and the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg. Monica has an undergraduate degree in Communication from Florida State University and a Master's Degree in Florida Studies from USF St. Petersburg. She spent a decade working in heritage tourism and education with the Florida Humanities Council. Monica was a member of Preserve the ‘Burg’s Board of Directors from 2009 to 2013, a period where we enjoyed renewed popularity due to our advocacy work and the advent of the beloved Movies in the Park, which celebrates its tenth year in 2019. “Returning to Preserve the ‘Burg feels like coming home. I have never lost my passion for sharing and preserving the unique character and history of St. Petersburg. I’m excited by the growth of Preserve the ‘Burg’s membership and profile over the past several years and look forward to delivering on the mission that our members believe in and joined to support. The rapid development in our city provides challenges to maintaining our unique character, but also presents opportunities for Preserve the ‘Burg to educate, advocate, and celebrate, which are the things we do best.” Known for her love of her community, Monica also volunteers as the Chairperson for the Coffee Pot Turkey Trot 5K benefiting the public school that her two children attend. In 2018, inspired by her husband’s recent medical crisis, Monica ran the NYC Marathon in support of aortic research, sparking a passion for long-distance running. “I’ve learned in both my personal life and career that, when faced with a challenge, the best approach is to get busy. Nothing changes otherwise. I look forward to bringing that same approach back to Preserve the ‘Burg.” “I’m so excited to have Monica with us once again,” said Board of Directors President, Emily Elwyn. “She has such a deep well of knowledge with our organization and the city’s history. And she has strong relationships with stakeholders throughout St. Pete. Her passion for advocacy and ability to communicate our mission are needed at this time of rapid growth.”
