Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority partners with Hyundai on connected vehicle pilot

June 10, 2020 - The Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority has partnered with Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. in what the authority called the next step in making connected roadways a realty in Tampa Bay. THEA has been collaborating with the U.S. Department of Transportation on a connected vehicle pilot site and today announced it will use connected vehicle-ready Hyundai vehicles and hardware in a pilot deployment. Hyundai and THEA will host a demonstration in September to showcase the initiative, a news release said. The U.S. DOT awarded THEA $18.5 million in 2015 to conduct the connected vehicle pilot program, which employs state-of-the-art technology that allows vehicles to communicate with roadside infrastructure and other vehicles about traffic, hazards and other factors affecting pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle safety.
