Dream Defenders Endorse Richie Floyd
One Year After Protests for George Floyd, Dream Defenders Endorse Black Lives Matter Activist, Richie Floyd, in St. Petersburg City Council District 8
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — Ahead of the St. Petersburg August 24 Primary Election, Dream Defenders eagerly endorse Richie Floyd in St. Petersburg City Council District 8.
Richie Floyd — beloved teacher and outspoken advocate for Black Lives Matter, LGBTQIA+ rights and worker’s rights — launched his campaign in December 2020, running on a platform for social justice, economic justice and environmental justice.
For Dream Defenders and other organizers in St. Petersburg, the expansion of the CALL program, which reduces police involvement in calls for service, is one of many important issues Richie Floyd plans to tackle.
“As a community organizer, I was proud to push for the CALL program with a broad coalition of St Pete residents,” said Richie Floyd in a Dream Defenders candidate questionnaire. “I support fully implementing the program, and helping the program build a relationship with the first responders that it works with.”
As Dream Defenders, we fundamentally believe that people deserve safety and the opportunity to lead dignified lives. Between the uprisings of last year and years past — to the thousands of people we lost amid the COVID-19 crisis — we’ve seen that too many powerful public officials in Florida are willing to sacrifice our safety for political gain.
“With the recent passage of anti-protest, anti-trans, anti-union and voter suppression legislation, Floridians have quite a hill to climb,” said Nailah Summers, Dream Defenders Co-Executive Director. “The people of Florida deserve public officials who will stand with them, and we believe that with Richie Floyd on the ticket, St. Pete’s future can look different from Florida’s current political trajectory.”
