The Florida Orchestra’s 55th season will begin a week earlier than previously announced; apparently the opportunity to book iconic violinist Itzhak Perlman as a guest soloist was just too good an opportunity to pass up.

And so Perlman will perform with TFO Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. The concert, announced as “The 55th Celebration,” will include film music – including the theme from Schindler’s List, which Perlman made famous on the original soundtrack recording back in 1993.

It’s a benefit concert, supporting the orchestra’s music and education programs.

Although season subscriptions went on sale when the season was announced in May, individual concert tickets go on sale today for TFO subscribers and “top donors.” The general public can purchase individual concert tickets beginning Aug. 15.

Orff’s Carmina Burana, with the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, is the next performance on the now-expanded season list, Oct. 7-9.

In other TFO news, management ratified a new three-year contract that continues a steady increase in musician salaries and will gradually extend the length of the orchestra season – adding one week of concerts for each of the next three seasons.

Music director Michael Francis is beginning his eighth season with TFO.
