Aldi to take over former Tyrone Mall space
Niche grocer Aldi is planning to take over the shuttered Hitchcock’s Green Market space in northwest St. Petersburg.
The 28,605-square-foot space at 6765 22nd Avenue North is part the Tyrone Square Mall complex, according to a site plan from Seritage Growth Properties.
The location is next to PetSmart, near Dick’s Sporting Goods store and Five Below, on the north side of the mall.
Prior to Alachua County-based Hitchcock’s Green Market operating at the location before closing shop in 2022, the building housed a Lucky’s Supermarket, which closed in 2020.
The German-owned Aldi discount chain has two St. Petersburg locations; at 1551 34th St. N. and 2900 34th St. S.
Aldi representatives were not immediately available to comment about their plans for the new store, which as of today, has not been announced by the company.
Aldi has more than 2,000 “no-frills” stores across 36 states, with over 25,000 employees.
According to Aldi’s property requirements for store sites, the building must be at least 22,000 square feet with at least 2.5 acres for purchase and/or development.
The stores must be at a site zoned for grocery use and sites that are located in “community and regional shopping districts.”
The grocer also requires stores to have a minimum of 95 dedicated parking spaces.

What about one on the north east side of the city? That old Winn Dixie on 4th Street has been sitting vacant for years.
