City crews work to stop sewage leak

August 21, 2023 - St. Petersburg city officials announced Sunday that 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater discharged into Riviera Bay between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 19 as crews attempted to contain a force main leak. Approximately 800 gallons spilled into the 8400 block of Tallahassee Dr. NE, with 600 reaching the bay, on Aug. 18. Workers are now “effectively capturing the sewage as it leaks from the pipe” and storing it in a “pit lined with sandbags.” Vacuum trucks pull wastewater out of the pit and transport it to city facilities. Officials expect to complete repairs by Tuesday.
