State of Pinellas nonprofits to be discussed Oct. 4
The results of a comprehensive survey examining the state of the nonprofit sector in Pinellas County will be discussed Wednesday, Oct. 4 at the Center for Health Equity in St. Petersburg.
The event, from 9-11 a.m., will feature speakers from the St. Petersburg Foundation, Pinellas Community Foundation and others, sharing information and statistics on how nonprofits are faring, how Covid-19 impacted operations and the importance of nonprofits in our community.
“As employers and service providers, nonprofit organizations are key components of our local economy, and it’s important to come together as a sector to learn from each other and collaborate,” said Karen Chassin, St. Petersburg Foundation Executive Director Emeritus.
The demands on nonprofits in Pinellas are high, particularly due to poverty. In the U.S.A., 36.15% of households are what the United Way defines as ”ALICE” families – asset-limited, income-constrained. That means above the federal poverty level but struggling to cover the basic necessities of life. That’s higher than the state average of 30%.
Salaries are lower than average. The average nonprofit employee earns around $60,000 against a state average of $63,000. In Pinellas County, there are 1,223 nonprofits, employing 26,658 people. Their revenues total $7.3 billion.
Built upon the Foundation For a Healthy St. Petersburg’s 2018 Pinellas County Nonprofit Scan and Survey, the second survey “provides valuable insights in what our nonprofit organizations need,” according to the St. Petersburg Foundation’s engagement director Ashley Morales, “and will help us identify areas where we can work together to share services to reduce administrative costs”
At Wednesday’s event, the organizations will delve into nonprofit data, uncover vital connections, engage in a data-driven dialogue and discuss the future landscape of nonprofits in Pinellas County. An extended question and answer period will bring participants into the conversation.
The survey was conducted through the Customer Experience Laboratory at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.
Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free. RSVPs are required at this link.
