Hi there,

I just wanted you to know about an upcoming book talk with an author who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. On Thursday, January 11th, Dr. Kevin Kokomoor will be presenting a lecture based on his new book, La Florida: Catholics, Conquistadors, and Other American Origin Stories (Rowman & Littlefield/Pineapple Press, September 2023) at the St. Petersburg Museum of History at 6pm.

In La Florida, Kokomoor explores a Spanish thread to early American history that is unfamiliar or unknown to most Americans. A few highlights include:

• Slavery in the US began long before the English brought enslaved people to the colonies . It started much earlier, in present-day Florida.
• The first American cowboys were Native Americans and African Americans (and they weren’t living in Texas)
• America’s real first Thanksgiving was likely in Florida
• America’s first underground railroad started in St. Augustine
• Barbecue’s origins can be traced to Spanish and Native American traditions in La Florida

You can find more in depth analysis of the topics above in this author Q&A here, and more info about the author is below my signature. Please let me know if you would like a copy of La Florida or if you need anything else from me. I look forward to hearing from you!
