Arts Alive! podcast: Poet and novelist Gloria Muñoz
St. Petersburg Poet Laureate Gloria Muñoz is our guest on this episode of Arts Alive! Born night here in the city, Muñoz is one of the brightest literary lights we have.
She has published two award-winning books of poetry, and her first novel, the Young Adult story This is The Year, came out in January. She discusses the futuristic novel in-depth, including its sub-plot about the effects of climate change, during the conversation.
Muñoz, who’s also a professional literary translator (as a Colombian American, she is fluent in both English and Spanish) and an educator. And a songwriter: We also talk about Moonlit Musica, a media company specializing in sound production, which she operates with her husband, jazz drummer Mark Feinman.
Extremely community-minded, Muñoz the Poet Laureate has a hand in nearly every literacy-focused program in the city. It’s not about her, she insists with humility. Collaboration is one of the keys to her success.
“There’s so many writers here – I want it to be ‘City of Writers,” Muñoz says, “something that feels like it’s ours. And not necessarily just one person’s.”
