It’s Second Saturday ArtWalk time yet again, and could there be a finer month than May to go gallery-hopping at dusk?
The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance’s self-guided tour of creative nooks, crannies, hot spots and studios is 5 to 9 p.m. this Saturday (May 11). The Arts Alliance’s handy guide and map to this month’s participants (more than 40 of them) is here.

Making its debut Thursday at Craftsman House Gallery is Now and Then You Spot a Great Photo – Looking at St. Pete: 75 Years Ago & Today. The late Robert Preston was photo editor of the St. Petersburg Times and Evening Independent, and an accomplished photographer himself, and in that capacity shot news for the Times as far back as World War II. (He was also Managing Editor of the Independent).
Preston died in 2007 at age 83. His daughter, Patricia Preston Mastry, curated this show from her father’s 1950s black and whites of St. Pete life. She’s also a photographer, and has reproduced many of the locales, as they look today.
Now and Then You Spot a Great Photo opens with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception Thursday, and another from 5 to 8 Saturday (during the ArtWalk). Patricia Preston Mastry will be in attendance both days.
The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg’s Painting in the Park event is Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. It’s a kids’ art activity day, for toddlers on up, and it’s free: Chalk art and other fun stuff inspired by works in the museum’s collection. Register here.
New at Fairgrounds St. Pete, the interactive art, walk-through weirdness at the Factory St. Pete, is a new permanent installation from the profoundly talented Jabari Reed, a.k.a. iBOMS.
Mixed-media artist Genevieve Lykes Dimmitt and sculptor David Price will talk Saturday at Wild Space Gallery, inside The Factory. The artists behind the current exhibition The Nature of Healing will discuss the profound connection between art and nature from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., the Imagine Museum is holding a reception for painter Debbie Arambula. Her Imagine exhibit is titled The Heart’s Kaleidoscope: An Artist’s Journey To Celebrate Love.

Homecoming: New Work by John Hosford opens with a Second Saturday reception of Soft Water Gallery, on the Warehouse Arts District Arts Xchange campus. It’s a collection of surreal landscapes by the Florida native, recently returned to his home state. The show will be up through July 6.
The St. Petersburg Month of Photography organization will name its 2024 Photo Laureate at an event Saturday at the Morean Arts Center. Finalists are Christa Moody, David Moreno, José Ramirez, Ric Savid and Marian Tagliarino, with pictorial talents including photojournalism, environmental portraits and photo collage. Their work is on view at the Morean through May 25; Saturday’s reception is 5-8 p.m., with the new Photo Laureate announcement expected at 7. Find details here.
The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art has launched a virtual tour of the recently-closed exhibition Far East to West: The Chinese American Frontier. Curated by the museum’s Emily Kapes in consultation with the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans of Tampa Bay, the exhibition explores the history and contributions of early Chinese Americans in transforming the landscape and character of the American West. New Saturday at Drew Marc Gallery, on “Gallery Row” inside the Factory: Oceanic Dreams, works by Jason Hackenwerth, Jule Voz, Cobie Cruz. Michelle Gordon and Filia Winston.
Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., the Gallery at Creative Pinellas unveils its 2024 Emerging Artist exhibition with a reception. The artists are Kaitlin Crockett, Vanessa Cunto, Thomas Sayers Ellis, Fran Failla, Tyler Gillespie, Antonia Lewandowski, David McCauley, Harriet Monzon-Aguirre, Gaby Rosa and Luci Westphal. The works will be on view through July 21.
Creative Pinellas’ next exhibit, opening May 23, is Flora & Fauna, in partnership with the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation to put the focus on Floridian nature. The artists are A Galban, Adriano Nicot, Jorge Dans, Froilán Escobar, Josignacio and Leslie Hiatt.
New May 14-18 at Tampa’s USF Contemporary Art Museum: Breaking Barriers: PORTRAIT, bringing together the art of 22 U.S. veterans and their family members. This equals 66 photographs from two intensive artist-led photography workshops. Reception and artist panel takes place May 17, 7-9 p.m. Details are here.
