Developer unveils ambitious South St. Pete revitalization project

Drastic changes are on the horizon for a blighted South St. Petersburg corridor known for its lack of healthy food options, retail offerings and neighborhood connectivity. 

Local developer John Barkett and his wife, Julie, have unveiled plans to transform several parcels along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South, near Historic Roser Park and the St. Petersburg Innovation District, into a wellness hub. They dubbed their ambitious adaptive reuse project The Looking Glass Initiative.

Water Treatment Plant improvement plans discussed 

City Engineering & Capital Improvements and Public Works leaders came together Wednesday to discuss planned operational improvements for the Cosme Water Treatment Plant in a community meeting at the Maureen B. Gauzza Public Library. 

The plant, located at 16015 Race Track Road in Odessa, was built in 1930. According to the City, the water produced at the facility is “distributed to more than 300,000 customers through 92,000 water accounts.”
