A partial solar eclipse will occur for Monday afternoon, April 8th. During the eclipse, senior citizen gardeners and environmentalists will host an eclipse watch at the Sunshine Center in Saint Petersburg. People of all ages are invited. The Sunshine Center is a senior citizens center for Saint Petersburg. It is located at 330 Fifth Street North.

Elders at the Sunshine Center will provide safety eyeglasses and instructions for watching the eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 1:43 pm on April 8th. The Sunshine Center event will continue until the Sunshine Center closes at 4:00 pm. Information about solar power, health and safety during the hot weather, and community vegetable gardening during the the four seasons will be provided. Artists will make cyanotypes (solar prints) during the eclipse.

Senior citizen environmentalists are called "gray greens." Because of its large population of seniors, Saint Petersburg has gained a national reputation for its involvement with "gray greens." Many seniors are involved in community gardening, tree planting, and environmental health and safety work during extreme weather. Information about these activities will be provided.
