Join Preserve the ‘Burg and the Open Partnership Education Network for an evening with renowned urban planner, Jeff Speck, author of Walkable City.

Florida is well-known as one of the most dangerous states for pedestrians. The increasing lack of walkability in American cities has led to dire health implications, economic drain, and a rapid and harmful decrease in civic engagement. Conversely, those American cities that have embraced walkable urbanism are thriving.

We invite you to join renowned urban planner Jeff Speck to discuss the importance of walkability in building an engaged, healthy, and economically viable community.

The evening will include:

6:00 PM – Patron Reception (additional ticket required)

7:00 PM – Program and Q&A

8:00 PM – Book Signing

Local bookseller Tombolo Books will be on-site for purchases of Walkable City and other books of local interest.

Jeff Speck is a city planner and urban designer who advocates internationally for more walkable cities. As Director of Design at the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003 through 2007, he presided over the Mayors’ Institute on City Design and created the Governors’ Institute on Community Design. Prior to his federal appointment, Mr. Speck spent ten years as Director of Town Planning at DPZ & Co., the principal firm behind the New Urbanism movement. Since 2007, he has led Speck & Associates, a boutique planning firm that specializes in making American downtowns thrive. With Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Mr. Speck is the co-author of The Smart-Growth Manual and the “modern classic” Suburban Nation, which the Wall Street Journal calls “the urbanist’s bible.” His latest book, Walkable City—which the Christian Science Monitor calls “timely and important, a delightful, insightful, irreverent work”— was the best selling city-planning book of 2013-16.

A special thank you to Preserve the 'Burg partner, the Open Partnership Education Network (OPEN), and to our sponsors, Duke Energy, Smith and Associates, AARP Tampa Bay, and The Palladium Theater.
