The Hustle

Name: Jake Kurtz (Brick Media Group)

Posted By Kendel Burke

Jake Kurtz built his hustle from the ground up. Working 6pm-11pm on his then-side hustle for three years, Kurtz was finally able to take his business full-time. He drew from his expertise in media and advertisement and built Brick Media Group from the ground up. Brick Media Group helps small businesses within the Tampa Bay area develop a strong media presence, which, according to Kurtz, is at the root of every successful business. The company works on website design, representing the best qualities of different businesses and integrating social media links. Brick Media Group also consults with businesses to create advertisements that can be displayed on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and posts businesses on popular social media pages like “When In Tampa.”

Hustle (job)

Social Media Marketer

What do you do?

I run social media accounts and paid advertising efforts for local Tampa Bay Area companies.

Why do you do it?

I do it because I love helping people. I love seeing their reactions when I bring them new leads and new business. I also just love marketing, I think it’s fun.

What was your Catalyst? (How did you get started?)

I hated working a 9 to 5 and wanted to build something from the ground up.

What’s a common misconception or unknown aspect of what you do?

It’s way harder than it seems. A lot goes into social media. It just seems easy because it’s such a normal part of life, but it’s way harder from a business standpoint.

What’s the most challenging part of your Hustle?

My biggest challenge is finding a balance to stop working. When you’re running your own business you feel like it never ends.

What’s the most valuable piece of business advice/insight that’s helped you?

Give more than you take. When you care more about the other person more than yourself, you will always win in the long term game. I also learned that going “all in” without preparation is crazy. It took me 3 years of side hustling 6pm-11pm to make enough money to quit my 9-5.
