Name: Olya Schaerfer (The Athleticus)

Posted By Keara McGraw

Throughout her 20s, Olya Schaerfer wanted to be strong and fit but didn’t know how. “Sometimes I’d watch what other people did in the gym and copy them, but I felt unsure of myself and after a few halfhearted bicep curls, I’d be back to half-hearted jogging,": she says. "When I moved to St. Pete in 2014, I tried lots of local gyms and really got into cross-functional fitness. I loved it, but I was always tired. And everything hurt! I didn’t look as strong as I felt, and I still didn’t feel like I truly knew what I was doing in the weight room.” Over time, Olya has worked with various trainers and eventually really got into the study of fitness and nutrition herself. What she learned is that the targeted, personal approach works best.

Hustle (job)

COO of The Athleticus personal training studio.

What do you do?

At The Athleticus, you’re supported by a personal training team, leveraging our collective expertise in exercise science, physical therapy, kinesiology, nutrition and chiropractic for a safe and enjoyable path to getting fit. I run all operations while my excellent training team concentrates 100% on coaching clients to achieve their goals.

Why do you do it?

I wanted to have a fitness studio that I would love and that would help people like me, not athletes, not young, get really strong and confident.

What was your Catalyst? (How did you get started?)

I worked out at various gyms and couldn’t find one that had everything I wanted – actual fitness results, privacy, super knowledgeable staff, a members-only, comfortable atmosphere without crowds, so I decided to start my own.

What’s a common misconception or unknown aspect of what you do?

Often people think that they need a ton of cardio to get fit, and that’s simply untrue. We focus on strengthening muscles and joints, which delivers far better health and aesthetic results.

What’s the most challenging part of your Hustle?

Being patient with growth, and finding time to work out myself!

What’s the most valuable piece of business advice/insight that’s helped you?

Hedge your bets; never put everything into one basket.
